Department of Conservation contractors install the new Israeli bridge on the Routeburn Track last Thursday.
The popular 32km Routeburn Track is complete again for the first time since the Israeli bridge was washed away by flooding in April.

Department of Conservation Wakatipu contractors used a helicopter to help them install a $22,000 replacement steel-framed and timber-decked structure last week.

The 11m-long bridge is located between the Routeburn Flats and Routeburn Falls huts, about two hours' walk from the track's road end, past Glenorchy.

Doc capital works project manager Richard Struthers said this week it had involved a difficult piece of flying, "due to the very deep gully and the weight of the bridge was pretty much at the limit of the helicopter".

The bridge was named after a group of Israeli trampers who were trapped overnight on the far side of the stream when the previous bridge was washed out, 10 to 12 years ago.

In further preparation for the Great Walks season, Doc contractors will realign 2.4km of the track, from McKellar Saddle to the Greenstone Valley, in a $550,000 project which will take at least six months from November 1.

The season begins after Labour Weekend, to give New Zealanders access to the tracks first, and ends on May 1.

About 12,000 trampers stay in Routeburn Track huts each summer season, averaging two nights each.
