Queenstown photographer Jackie Ranken was last night named the 2010 Illustrative Photographer of the Year at the Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards in Queenstown.

It is the second consecutive year Ms Ranken has won the illustrative category at the annual awards, and in 2998 she won New Zealand Photographer of the Year.

She was also selected as a finalist, alongside her partner Mike Langford, in the editorial/photojournalism category.

NZIPP president Craig Robertson said the award further enhanced Ms Ranken's credibility as an internationally recognised lecturer, judge and co-director for the Queenstown Centre for Creative Photographers.

More than 1000 photographs, which were entered across 10 categories, were judged by some of the top New Zealand and international photographers.

"The awards challenge our thoughts about photography and showcase the incredible talent in our industry," Mr Robertson said.

The 2010 New Zealand Photographer of the Year was Tony Carter, of New Plymouth.

Alan Dove, of Dunedin, was a finalist in the people photography award.

Earlier this month, Wanaka photographer Camilla Stoddart earned a place among 50 finalists in the Red Bull Illume action sports photography awards in Dublin.

Stoddart was the only New Zealander and only female photographer to be selected as a finalist from more than 22,000 entries, with her image of base jumper Josie Symons plummeting over a Rob Roy Glacier waterfall.

"There are not a lot of female photographers in action and adventure sports because it's so physical.

It was the most humbling experience, being up there with the world's best action sports photographers, meeting them and hearing their story," she said in a media release.
