Alleged death threat, assault

An alleged death threat and an assault on a police officer were in the mix for police in Queenstown at the weekend.

At 12.20am on Saturday police stopped a 23-year-old man in The Mall for fighting and pursued him after he fled.

Sergeant Steve Watt said when officers caught up with the man, he punched one of them in the side of the head, but fortunately caused no injury.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer.

A short time later, about 1.30am, a 40-year-old man was seen "acting strangely" and emptying rubbish bins at Queenstown Airport.

Sgt Watt said security staff approached the man — who was well-known to police — and he allegedly threatened to kill them before fleeing.

The man was later arrested in Spence Rd at 6pm and charged with assaulting a taxi driver and with threatening to kill over the earlier incident.

Police were again called into action early on Sunday, a 20-year-old male being arrested and charged with assault.

He had been refused entry to Winnies in The Mall for being intoxicated, and allegedly punched a member of the security staff in the head.

Another alcohol-related event required police intervention, after a car crashed in Hallenstein St at midnight on Saturday.

The male driver fled the scene, but was later found in Gorge Rd and breathalysed.

He recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 740mcg. —
