The Mill, in Remarkables Park’s Tulip Lane, will be the largest private sports centre of its kind in New Zealand, boasting more than 2500sq m of space, offering locals and visitors a world-class, integrated sports and fitness training and recovery facility.
The project is being led by Remarkable Physios’ Peter Forch and podiatrist Georgina Read, with financial backing from Queenstown entrepreneur Rod Drury.
Forch says the team is taking the very best in sports industry practices and facilities from around the world and merging them into one specifically-designed space.
"We’re offering locals — both elite athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts — the opportunity to train and recover in a bespoke environment not previously seen in New Zealand," Forch says.
"And we’re really excited about the opportunity to create a hub for the community; a place that meets everyone’s training needs under one spectacular architecturally-designed roof."
The facility, designed by renowned architects Warren and Mahoney, will feature a 1200sq m gym, a spin cycle studio, group high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, studio, a 25m indoor turf track, indoor and outdoor training spaces, a high-tech recovery room, treatment rooms, a contrast therapy zone with infrared/traditional saunas and plunge pools, and a mezzanine meeting and event space.
Staff permanently onsite include physiotherapists, podiatrists, massage therapists, nutritionists, performance coaches, an imaging specialist and other medical professionals.
Forch believes The Mill will also strengthen the offering for international professional athletes and teams looking for training camp destinations.
"Queenstown is already a popular base for international athletes across a range of disciplines but access to a facility of this quality, and with this level of world-class professional care and equipment, will encourage them to stay longer and spend more, impacting significantly on our local economy."
The Mill is being constructed by locally-based Cook Brothers — it is expected to open mid next year.
