At the end of last month, community initiative Shaping Our Future released its final report on transport in Queenstown.
To solve the resort’s chronic congestion problems, the report writers suggested a single entity be formed to cut through red tape and oversee transport planning and funding.
The entity would be primarily made up of the Queenstown Lakes District Council, NZ Transport Agency and Otago Regional Council.
Mr Boult told the Otago Daily Times those bodies and Queenstown Airport already met regularly to discuss transport issues.
"Formalising that in a fashion that Shaping Our Future are talking about has some appeal and it’s certainly something I would be interested in taking a closer look at."
The report’s recommendations included the development of a district-wide strategy, improvements to public transport and progressive pedestrianising of Queenstown’s CBD.Additional funding could come from a visitor levy or congestion charging, the report said.
Mr Boult, a former member of Shaping Our Future, said he did not see anything in the report that was not already being pursued or discussed.‘‘It’s good to get an external eye on the issue and to get people’s views on whether we’re travelling in the right direction.
"I think that there is alignment between council’s view, my own view and Shaping Our Future."
The Wakatipu’s little-used and expensive bus system will get a radical overhaul later this year.
Mr Boult’s aim — based on subsidies from central, regional and local government — is for $2 bus fares across the Wakatipu.
Queenstown Airport is building a car park at Frankton from which it will launch a 12-month park and ride trial.
The council is considering other public transport options.
Shaping our Future chairman Mark Edghill said the Queenstown transport report had already been presented to the district council.
Members of the independent incorporated society would also present the report to Transport Minister Simon Bridges and the local governance transport group, made up of QLDC, NZTA and ORC.
