Just under 200 children from Queenstown Primary School took part in the senior cross-country race on Friday, ahead of the regional competition this week.

Pupils from years 5 and 6 walked the circuit at Twelve Mile Delta Recreation Reserve to familiarise themselves, then raced in male and female categories in perfect weather.

The 1.6km course went downhill from the starting line, crossed a creek, then continued along part of the Bobs Cove walk to the finishing loop.

Parents and grandparents cheered from the sidelines and others volunteered as marshalls along the circuit.

The top 10 runners from years 5 to 8 will compete in the Central Otago Cross-Country Race at the delta reserve this Wednesday.

Cross-country results. -Girls, year 5: Ella Gibson, 1; Olivia Tutty, 2; Abbey Downing, 3.

Year 6: Melissa Romeril, 1; Grace Lamond, 2; Aroha Birch-Thompson, 3.

Boys, year 5: Matthew Cordelle, 1; Connor Kennedy, 2; Tom Brooks, 3.

Year 6: Mitchell Mawhinney, 1; Yasin Tekinkaya, 2; Gus Wood, 3.

House results: Rata, 1050pts, 1; Kawarau, 1075, 2; Tahuna and Kahu, 1089, equal-3.
