Widening the single-lane McChesney bridge at Arthur's Point to two lanes will begin on Monday and is expected to be completed by next winter.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council's dual-bridge operation has been planned for some time and after the historic Arthur's Point Tavern was demolished in June, they could start to get moving on the work.

Council project manager Lane Vermaas said the bridge and road realignment was stage three of the council's Gorge Rd upgrade.

Stage one included roadworks from Queenstown's entry to Watties Track and stage two began at the Edith Cavell single-lane bridge and ran towards the Arthur's Point township.

The latest upgrade, worth $1.6 million, would involve a total road realignment and widening as well as the historic McChesney bridge gaining another lane.

Mr Vermaas said the adjustment was based around safety for both cyclists and motorists as it was a hazardous area.

The council considered cutting into the hill by the tavern site, but decided to take a more "cost-effective option".

The council applied for a permit with historical trusts and would use the bridge's "old deck" and abutment.

All works should be finished by July 2012.
