The entry to The Warehouse at Remarkables Park was full of onlookers as Sharon Shaw and Vanessa Warren sat in pride of place, having their hair clipped off by Cutting Room staff Alison Cahill and Amy Roche to raise money for the Cancer Society.
The two women, part of the "Remarkable Reds" Relay for Life team, threw down the gauntlet last month by announcing they would shave their heads if their team could raise more than $3000.
The head shave was set for Saturday at noon and by Friday afternoon the team tally was still about $1300, Ms Shaw said.
The team hit Queenstown's nightspots, and raised more than $1000 that night.
By noon on Saturday, the team tally had reached $3340.40, so the clippers were plugged in and the women transformed.
The two have been friends for more than four years. Ms Warren's father died of bowel cancer three years ago and five days later, Ms Shaw's mother died from pancreatic cancer.
Ms Shaw said she was very emotional on Saturday, but not because of losing her locks.
"We just pulled it out of the bag [on Friday night]. That's what I was most emotional about. It's amazing how much money people give when they're drinking.
"All of that money ... to know that it's going to such a good cause [is amazing]."
While Ms Shaw said her hair still felt "a bit strange" yesterday and it felt like she had been "sleeping on sandpaper", she'd had plenty of positive comments and was now proudly sporting a bandana to keep her head warm.
The Cancer Society's Relay for Life is at the Cromwell Race Course this weekend.
