An Auckland woman was taken to hospital with a suspected leg injury yesterday after the jet ski she was riding collided with another on Lake Wakatipu.
Queenstown harbourmaster Marty Black said the woman, aged in her 20s, was hurt when one jet ski "ran over the top'' of another near Frankton Marina.
Both craft were carrying two people.
"From what I can tell, the contributing factors were speed and that the jet skis were too close together.''
The incident was a reminder that water users should keep at least 50m away from other water users at all times.
The craft had been hired from local operator Water Sport World, which gave all customers a safety briefing, as required by law.
The company was a certified operator with a good safety record, Mr Black said.
"As far as I'm aware, it's their only incident in four or five years and thousands of hires.''
People riding jet skis had to follow the same rules as other powered craft, which included a speed limit of five knots when 200m or less from the shore, and staying at least 50m away from swimmers and other craft.
