Wilding control group in final

This week, the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group will compete with some of New Zealand's best and brightest organisations, in the TrustPower National Community Awards.

The awards will be held in the Tauranga-Bay of Plenty region from Friday until Sunday.

The wilding control group will represent Queenstown Lakes.

Central Otago will be represented by the Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group.

There are 23 other voluntary associations from around New Zealand competing.

These groups were all named winners in the regionals.

Each will be asked to give an eight-minute presentation and 1000-word summary of its group.

The judging of the presentations and summaries will take place on Saturday.

The winner will be announced on Saturday night at a dinner at Mills Reef Winery and Restaurant.

TrustPower community relations representative Melanie Tavendale said both Central Otago groups had spent many hours preparing what were sure to be fantastic presentations for the awards.

"The Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes communities should be really proud of what the Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group and the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group have achieved," Ms Tavendale said.

Attending the awards from the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Group will be Briana Pringle and Peter Willsman, Queenstown Lakes deputy mayor Lyal Cocks and his wife Diana.

Representing the Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group will be Rebecca Anderson and Viv Buchanan, with Central Otago deputy mayor Neil Gillespie and his wife Joy.

The supreme winner will take home $2500, a framed certificate and a trophy, as well as a prize package valued at $1500 from Foresee Communications.

The runner-up will receive $1500 and a framed certificate.
