With her oldest daughter due to be married in January, Janice Keenan, of Gore, came to the Southern Lakes Wedding Show to support her, and walked out with a wedding package worth over $20,000.

Her daughter, Kelly, who lives in Omakau and has a horse-trekking business called Trail Treks, said the prize might have to be shared, though her sister was not yet engaged.

Over 300 people took in everything wedding related at Skyline on Saturday - the event uniting family members from across Otago and from the North Island.

Queenstown Lakes businesses, from cake makers to photographers and wedding vehicle suppliers, were put on show against the backdrop of the snow-coated Remarkables and the area's suitability as a wedding destination was demonstrated.

Southern Lakes Wedding Show organiser Ome Allington said a buyer from the gay market in Australia had come over for the show and other people attending had come from Perth, Dunedin, Ashburton and the North Island.

The show was advertised in Australia and the recent passing of the Marriage Amendment Bill added to the allure of New Zealand, and more specifically, Queenstown, as a wedding destination, Ms Allington said.

Although the few men were far outnumbered by excited women, a dedicated ''manzone'' with beer and darts was available to those not being dragged around the exhibits.

Ms Allington agreed there could well be a boom in Queenstown weddings resulting from the show and said it was hoped the event would be held for a second time next year.
