The Wanaka War Memorial on the Chalmers St hill lookout area is to have lighting installed around it.
The upgrade is part of a district-wide council initiative and the illumination project for the cenotaph monument has also received the support of the Wanaka RSA.
The illumination upgrade was approved by the Wanaka Community Board on Tuesday.
The memorial will be lit between dusk and midnight by three in-ground lanterns, facing away from adjoining residential neighbours.
The Community Board also approved the construction of a pedestrian access way from the eastern end of Upton Street to connect with the lookout area and Chalmers St, running behind the southwest side of the memorial.
The pedestrian strip runs between two Upton Street properties on land the council prevented the adjoining owners from acquiring in 1994.
