An Auckland couple on a motorcycle tour were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital yesterday after they ploughed into a mob of sheep while riding their Harley-Davidson through the Cardrona Valley.
The 55-year-old female passenger broke a leg in the crash, while the 57-year-old male driver also had broken bones, Constable Bruce McLean, of Wanaka, said.
The pair were riding northwards on the Wanaka side of Crown Range Rd when six sheep ran out in front of their bike near the No 7 Cardrona River bridge, Const McLean said.
‘‘The couple's motorbike hit one of the sheep, killing the animal and causing them to crash,'' he said.
He advised farmers to check their fences, because it was not the first time wandering stock had caused accidents on the scenic route between Wanaka and Queenstown.
Traffic was stopped while the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter landed on the road to pick up the injured couple before transporting them to Dunedin Hospital, Const McLean said.
