Volunteers distributing 75 hampers

Community Networks will distribute 75 Christmas hampers around the Upper Clutha district this week, following a food bank drive on Tuesday night.

The collection of food, cash and other items was organised for the third year in a row by a community newspaper.

Volunteers from St John, three volunteer fire brigades and other organisations collected donations in Wanaka, Luggate and Lake Hawea.

Community Networks manager Heather Clay estimated the haul was about 10% to 15% bigger than last year, but demand had also increased.

Of the 75 hampers, 10 would be given to older people and the remainder would go to families or people living on their own.
