Visitor parking gets nod

Unrestricted car parking in downtown Queenstown will be phased out and visitor parking phased in following the Queenstown Lakes District Council's adoption of its amended parking bylaw.

After a year of reviews, committee debates, public consultations and a hearing panel, all but two councillors voted to adopt the parking control bylaw yesterday.

The bylaw will mean either increases, limitations or standardisations of parking restrictions throughout the central business district.

The bylaw will take effect once signage has been installed or amended at which time enforcement will begin.

Cr John S Wilson said it would be better to improve the efficiency of public transport first, then review the enforcement of parking.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Clive Geddes said the management of short-term parking was the issue transportation planning manager Denis Mander was going to look at next.

Cr Cath Gilmour said the area outside Mini Golf Queenstown, on Upper Brecon St, was more suitable for campervan parking than directing them to Upper Ballarat St, given the busy roundabout at the intersection of Ballarat and Stanley Sts.

Cr Gilmour said she did not think signage would be adequate and asked for broader use of the colour code for clarity.

However, Mr Geddes reminded councillors the time for debate had passed and the matter on the table was the recommendation to adopt the amended bylaw. Cr Gilmour and Vanessa van Uden voted against but the motion was carried.
