Two stand for mayor

Two bids for the Queenstown Lakes District mayoralty were received, one from existing mayor Vanessa van Uden and another from Al Angus, whose 40 years in the Wakatipu have taken him from Kingston to Kinloch and in between.

Mr Angus said he had been involved in light engineering and machine operating and described himself as ''just a practical guy''.

It was announced yesterday that existing Arrowtown ward councillor Lex Perkins was re-elected unopposed.

Last year, after a proposal to abolish the Arrowtown ward, more than 200 submissions were received by the council, of which most favoured keeping the ward and councillor.

The Wakatipu ward is hotly contested, with 14 candidates for six places. All but two existing councillors are seeking re-election.

In the Wanaka ward, seven candidates are vying for three places, including the three sitting members.
