Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown (pictured), asked the Queenstown Returned and Services Association if she could sit on her horse outside the Queenstown Memorial Centre as part of the Anzac Day commemorations in memory of the role horses played in World War 1. Half a million horses were killed in the conflict. The RSA was pleased to accept her request.
A life-long horse rider, Sgt Pirovano said she was inspired to make her tribute by the film War Horse and research she did into the bravery of the cavalry. Queenstown RSA president David Geddes said the organisation was slightly ahead of where it was this time last year, with more than $10,000 in public donations collected and more expected this week. All funds go towards RSA welfare support for returned and ex-service personnel.
