Trial for jet-boat driver

A former Kawarau Jet driver has been committed for trial, following an accident last year which resulted in the death of a Chinese tourist.

Ian James Morgan, jet-boat driver, was driving the boat K-Jet 6, which was on a commercial Kawarau Jet trip on September 25 last year when it flipped at the confluence of the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers, trapping Chinese tourist Yan Wang (42).

Ms Wang died in the incident.

Morgan was charged under the Health and Safety in Employment Act with operating a jet-boat in a manner which caused unnecessary danger to other people.

The charge, which he denies, carries a maximum one-year jail sentence or a $10,000 fine.

The case will be called-over at the Invercargill District Court on December 11.
