Trenz back soon: CEO

Trenz will return to Queenstown ''in the reasonably near future'', Tourism Industry Association chief executive Martin Snedden says.

Mr Snedden was asked why Auckland was chosen for the second consecutive year as the location for the New Zealand tourism industry's 2014 international travel trade show. Trenz was hosted in Queenstown the previous two years to rave reviews.

Delegates told the organising association the 2012 Trenz was one of the best ever, 99% of international buyers and 98% of New Zealand exhibitors rating the event as either ''very successful'' or ''successful''.

Not only could international buyers and journalists experience Queenstown-Southern Lakes exhibitors' products for themselves only moments away from the exhibition halls, but significant travel and accommodation costs were saved, meaning first-time exhibitors, such as Discover Arrowtown, could afford to attend.

Trenz 2012 also pumped more than $2 million into the local economy. The Cloud and Shed 10, on Auckland's waterfront, will again host hundreds of Trenz delegates, from May 18 to 21 next year.

''It's a huge effort from the city or town to host Trenz and Queenstown put in enormous effort and was very successful - 2011 and 2012 really raised the bar in all sorts of ways,'' Mr Snedden said.

Other locations might be considered in future, he said.

''Auckland did a fantastic job and made sure the standard didn't go backwards and was a pretty obvious contender for this coming year, but it's certainly no slight on Queenstown.

''Everyone's only got really positive memories of Queenstown, so their time will come again in a not too distant future.''
