Treble Cone skifield opens in time for the school holidays

Treble Cone skifield opens today after snow on Wednesday night left the field's trails covered.

Staff were yesterday shovelling snow away from the base building in preparation for today's opening.

The fresh snow is allowing the skifield to open its Home Basin area a day before the school holidays start.

Manager Jackie van der Voort said the skifield received 15cm-20cm of snow around the base lodge and 30cm on the upper Home Basin.

The skifield made good progress with snow-making through the week, but needed an extra cover of natural snow to ensure trails had a good snow base.

The opening would feature live music to entertain the lunchtime crowd, Ms van der Voort said.

However, hardcore "Cone-heads" will not get access today to the challenging trails of the Saddle Basin.

Ms van der Voort said the basin would open as soon as weather and snow conditions allowed.

More snow is forecast for Southern skifields during the next few days.

Cardrona Alpine Resort received 20cm of snow on Wednesday night, spokesman Bruce McGeechan said.

It kept snowing yesterday morning before clearing to a "fantastic powder day".

Across the Cardrona Valley on the Pisa Range, the Snow Park and Snow Farm also received snow from Wednesday night's northwesterly front.
