Tourist charged over 'serious assault'

A Queenstown man required hospital treatment after an alleged assault by an Australian tourist in the resort overnight.

A 29-year-old Australian man was arrested and charged with injuring by an unlawful act and theft after the incident in Camp St just before midnight yesterday.

Acting Sergeant Jon Bisset, of Queenstown police, said the 35-year-old victim was ''seriously assaulted'' and taken to Lakes District Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The alleged offender also took the victim's hat.
