A toddler has drowned in Lake Wakatipu, at Queenstown, this afternoon.
Shortly after midday a Kelvin Heights resident contacted police to report that her two-year-old daughter had wandered off and could not be found.
Police started a search along the Lake Wakatipu foreshore in the Peninsula Rd area of Kelvin Heights.
Senior Sergeant John Fookes said the child was found face-down in the lake, about 100m from where she had last been seen, around 12.45pm.
Efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
The child's name will not be released until next-of-kin are notified.
