They do not play the understated game for recognition, but four Queenstown pool players will represent the area at the New Zealand Open in Auckland, starting tomorrow.

Harry's Pool team members - Andy Campbell, Ciaran Hayes, Simon Singleton and Daniel Orlowski - have been playing as a team for only six months and have decided they will give it their best at the national competition.

The four men met at Harry's Pool Bar, one of Queenstown's popular pool spots and when Mr Singleton saw the national competition advertised he suggested they enter.

The four men had no expectations going into the weekend and knew they would be up against it, Mr Campbell said.

"Some of these guys will be playing for a living."

Rather than playing in the team of four, they will partner off for the Saturday competition and play singles on Sunday.

Mr Campbell will be partnered with Mr Singleton, while Mr Hayes and Mr Orlowski will cue up together.

"Me and Simon might go all right, because I'm playing with him," Mr Campbell joked.

The competition has 80 contestants entered including some Australians.

Other than the common interest of pool, the four also work in the hospitality industry, with Mr Campbell an assistant manager at the Millhouse Restaurant in Millbrook, Mr Hayes a kitchen-hand at the Frankton Ale House, and Mr Orlowski a bar manager at Searle Lane in Social in town.

Mr Singleton work's as a ski technician at Brown's ski shop, conveniently next door to Harry's Pool Bar.

The four try to get at least 2 to 3 hours' training in a night, but the hospitality hours make it difficult.

Mr Hayes said they were in it for the fun first time round and if they did well, they would perhaps look at taking the game more seriously.
