There was standing room only inside the Athenaeum Hall and mourners gathered outside for the memorial service of Jessica Anne Law (16), who died in a head-on collision near Arthurs Point on New Year's Day.
Jessica was a blossoming singer-songwriter and her performances played as photographs were projected on a screen.
Salvation Army Queenstown Corps leader Kenneth Walker led the service.
Corps leader Catherine Walker said music was synonymous with Jessica, who was gifted with "a lovely voice that could still a crowd and her guitar was like a second skin".
The talent of the Wakatipu High School pupil was recognised at Arrowtown Idol and national music competitions, including three annual New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards.
"Her goal in life was to be a performing arts teacher, to inspire others to enjoy the arts, particularly music, as much as she did," Mrs Walker said.
Jessica's father Max recalled his daughter's passion for people and for debate about the issues important to her.
"There's so much to be said and more to learn about the issues surrounding your far too early death.
"Good luck in your final earthly performance.
"I love you, dear daughter."
Her mother Kaye remembered their last shopping trip and lamented all the landmark moments of life they would not be able to share, and her siblings George (24), Thomas (22), Jeanna (21) and James (18) also paid tribute.
Praise for Jessica's kindness and musical gifts came from Wakatipu High School principal Lynn Cooper.
Singing teacher and friend Andrea Cruickshank said Jessica's voice was "transcending".
The teenager always cared for family and friends.
"I saw a writing style that was far beyond her years . . . I felt very privileged and protective as I saw her grow up before my eyes."
• The other occupants of the car involved in the crash remained in hospital yesterday.
Jessie Boulay (16), of Queenstown, was in intensive care and visiting was restricted at Dunedin Hospital.
Josephine Clay (16), of Queenstown, was in a stable condition in the children's ward at Southland Hospital, in Invercargill.
