Notes on Isaiah 6 (2013) is one of 10 oil on canvas and paint on aluminium pieces by Christchurch artist Darryn George for his debut solo exhibition in Milford Galleries Queenstown.
''George explores descriptions of God as articulated by Old Testament prophet Isaiah, using Te Reo translations which are both symbolic text and abstract form,'' senior art consultant Jacinta Byron said.
Of Ngapuhi descent. George has a graduate diploma in teaching and completed a master's degree in fine arts,
specialising in painting, from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1998.
He has exhibited in solo and group transtasman shows including the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery, Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures, Porirua, Canterbury Museum, City Gallery Wellington and Waikato Museum of Art and History.
A book named for the artist was published, including images of paintings from 2004-10 by Mihi Publishers, in 2010. George was selected as one of two New Zealand artists to exhibit at the Palazzo Bembo as part of the official collateral events of the Venice Biennale this year.
• Darryn George: Notes on Isaiah runs from Saturday, October 19, until November 13.
