Freelance Irish cameraman Leon McCarron (24) stopped over in Queenstown at the weekend as part of his journey from New York to Hong Kong gathering subjects for a documentary on sustainable tourism.

When it is complete, he hopes to sell the feature-length documentary - provisionally titled The Cycling Reporter- to independent film festivals and release it before the end of 2011.

Hailing from Castlerock in Northern Ireland and with a background in cinematography and social narrative, Mr McCarron said the idea to cycle 20,000km around the world was inspired by the opportunity to unite his passions - travel, adventure, cycling, sustainability and film-making.

"I wanted to combine my interests - the theme is people with a passion, people who are devoted to what they do," he said.

"My theory is when people are enthusiastic and passionate, then that comes across on camera and it will be interesting."

Beginning in Auckland and looping up to Northland, then down through the central North Island to Wellington and Marlborough, he ended up on the West Coast, where he spoke to a couple of dedicated Doc rangers rescuing kiwi eggs near Haast and Franz Josef.

Then it was on to Wanaka to interview Eco Wanaka Tours co-founder Chris Riley, who, he said, was "a cool guy" who had "fought all the battles to set this up".

"It doesn't matter if they do it for a living or not, these guys all devote so much of their lives to their passions. It's pretty interesting."

Mr McCarron said he chose to come to New Zealand after reading about the country and seeing it on TV.

"It just seemed like the type of place that would suit my interests."

The trip also stemmed from his nearly fulfilled dream to cycle the length of the North and South islands.

The film's strength would lie in the continuous shift between cultures - a method that will ultimately highlight the universal nature of those who are passionate, he said.

Mr McCarron will leave New Zealand via Christchurch before taking in Australia's east coast and Thailand on the way to his final destination, Hong Kong.
