Stolen clothing found on tour bus; no charges laid

A busload of Indian tourists were stopped by police at Franz Josef on Wednesday after two Wanaka clothing stores laid shoplifting complaints against some of the passengers.

Constable Mike Johnston said yesterday no charges were laid against the passengers because the shoplifters could not be identified, but garments were retrieved with the co-operation of the tour leader.

A jacket and two merino garments were returned to the Wanaka stores, Modeans and Glowing Sky.

Const Johnston said the shoplifting incident was unusual.

He said there was no indication the people who had taken the garments thought they or someone else had paid for them.

Police continue to investigate a fight between two groups of men outside the Doughbin in Wanaka about 1.30am last Sunday.

Constable Bruce McLean said it was likely four men, three in their early 20s and one aged 37, would be charged.
