Still no firm suspects in arson inquiry

The police investigation into a series of arsons in Wanaka this month has stalled.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said there was still no firm suspect.

Six fires were lit on the corner of Chalmers St and Stratford Tce between January 9 and 19.

Five were vegetation fires and one was set next to a parked Ford Falcon station wagon, which was destroyed.

Snr Sgt Grindell said several scenarios had been explored and it was possible the person responsible for lighting the fires had been in town on holiday and left.

"It was always going to be a hard one at this time of the year, with a lot of people coming in . . .

"With such a transient population, it is quite difficult," he said.
