For almost three decades Bev Cason has ploughed a furrow for the Lake County A&P Society.

She has been a mainstay of the committee which organises the popular Lake Hayes A&P Show.

So it was a well-earned honour when she became one of four volunteers to receive life-memberships of the society at the historic 100th show on Saturday.

And as secretary-treasurer, she will have some cash to count before the next committee meeting. A bumper crowd of about 5000 attended.

''I'm very proud,'' she said.

''I'm a country girl at heart and loyal to this fantastic organisation that works to promote the countryside of the Queenstown area.

''I've been on the committee 29 years altogether - five years as secretary-treasurer and 24 as treasurer - and I'll stay on to do my 30th in 2016.''

Bruce Douglas, Ken Robins and Donna Smith also became life members at the show, joining the nine-strong roster.

Mrs Smith, from Southland, has competed in showjumping at the show every year since her childhood, including this year.

''Very honoured,'' she said, ''though there are other people who I think deserve it more than I.

''I come here, compete and have a lot of fun - they do all the hard work.''

Mr Douglas celebrated his lifetime membership with a win in the dog trials with McKee. Mr Douglas has helped organise the competition for 20 years.

Co-ordinator Julie Hughes said the 100th show was probably also the most successful, drawing a huge crowd to the Lake Hayes showgrounds.

Thousands of people turned out in near perfect weather conditions, she said. Slight cloud cover provided welcome relief from the blazing sun.

They watched as the Isaac-Deans family horse Volronamo took the title of supreme champion hack, while Grace Thomson's Coincidentally with Grace was judged supreme champion pony.

Late in the afternoon, after a day grazing food stalls and watching performances by the Topp Twins, the crowd saw Scott Wylie win the horse and pony two-fence challenge on Spot Me, while Lana Mackay, on Marks & Sparks, won the horse and pony gambler's stakes.

Malvern Downs and Don Maclean & Co Ltd shared honours in the various sheep classes, one of Malvern's stock taking supreme champion sheep of the show.

Keen-as-mustard bakers, brewers, florists and crafts people took home awards in the home industries contests.

Harvey Clarke's cow Maria won champion pet.
