About 40 women, some from Queenstown and others from overseas, improved their skills and confidence on the slopes at the weekend, attending the Burton Snowbroads ski and snowboard freestyle camp.

Breakfast and bubbles broke the ice on Saturday morning, as the women got to know each other and the qualified instructors from the Remarkables Snowsports team and determined their level of ability, making new friends in the process.

They then spent the day practising one feature at a time on the Parklife terrain parks with guidance from their coaches, in bright sunshine and windy conditions. They paused for a barbecue lunch and finished with a party in Lone Star, Queenstown, complete with spot prizes.

Women-only freestyle progression camps at the Remarkables started in 2009 when a small group of female NZSki staff members wanted to advance their skills in the terrain park, but felt that they lacked the confidence to push themselves into a space dominated by men.

''We aim to provide a fun environment for girls of all abilities to progress safely in,'' Remarkables media and events co-ordinator Ben Kien said.

Saturday was the second and last Snowbroads for the season and both events were booked to capacity. Mr Kien expected another two camps would be organised next winter.
