Forecast snow to lake level in Queenstown did not eventuate yesterday. Instead, rain fell in the resort town. However, two-thirds of the flanks of the Remarkables were snow-covered and both Queenstown skifields had a good fall of snow yesterday.

Coronet Peak, which opened on Saturday, received 12cm of snow on the lower slopes and 20cm at the peak on Sunday night and 20cm to 35cm of snow had accumulated over the 24 hours to yesterday morning.

It kept snowing at Coronet Peak most of the yesterday, providing the first real "powder day", with fresh natural snow for those who braved chain restrictions on the access road and very limited visibility on the slopes.

Ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said about a thousand people visited the skifield yesterday, but strong southeasterly winds caused difficult conditions, with riming on the chairlift cables.

"We were busy de-icing most of the day, and at times it delayed the chairlift operations. We will keep battling ... all night, and will have the chairlifts running again in the morning," he said.

The Remarkables skifield had about 30cm of snow overnight. The forecast for today is for the weather to clear during the morning.

Cold southerlies will ease, with temperatures ranging from -5degC to 6degC.

The skifield weather is also due to clear, but it will remain frosty today and tomorrow.

Snow advanced well down the mountains towards Wanaka yesterday but it did not snow at lake level.

With the temperature about 3degC, Wanaka remained under a rain cloud.

Treble Cone Ski Area received 25cm in the home basin and 40cm in the saddle basin, bringing the snow base to 35cm and 70cm respectively. It was still snowing there yesterday.

Cardrona Alpine Ski Resort has not updated its snow report since May 31, but it was snowing on Mt Cardrona all weekend.

The Snow Farm cross country ski trails were open on Saturday and Sunday and closed yesterday. It will reopen again next weekend.

The Snow Park terrain park has about 35cm and snow continued on the Pisa Range yesterday.

Wanaka police reported a quiet day. An accident on the Crown Range Pass had been resolved by motorists before police arrived, and there were no injuries or damage, Constable Pete Reed said. Chains remain essential on the Crown Range.

The Lindis Pass was closed by police to all traffic at 12.30pm yesterday. When contacted at 3.30pm yesterday, Constable Chris McAnally, of Cromwell, said the road between Tarras and Omarama was closed until further notice.
