The recent clear skies and sunscreen days atop Queenstown's skifields have meant the ice bar at Coronet Peak has been kept busy, and a similar bar at the Remarkables' will open tomorrow.

Skiers and riders departing the Greengates chairlift at Coronet are welcomed at the top of the mountain by a fully-stocked bar carved from ice.

As well as "ice furniture", bar patrons can enjoy their refreshments on beanbags and other removable seating.

NZski sales and marketing manager Craig Douglas said the bar had proved "very popular" due to the unique experience and spectacular views.

Mr Douglas said Coronet Peak's ice bar, which was first provided last season, was now "much bigger in area with more furniture and more space for people".

Shane Edmond, of Christchurch, who visited the bar this week, said it was a "great addition up on the field to be able to enjoy a drink in the sunshine".

A second ski-in, ski-out facility which Mr Douglas said was a locals' favourite is Heidi's Hut, found in Rocky Gully at Coronet Peak.

"It's not hard to get to if you're an intermediate skier."

Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence said their ice bar at the top of Alta (main) chairlift was scheduled to open tomorrow.

"It's bigger and better than last year," he said.

He described the views over the Southern Alps from the bar as "tremendous".

"And they are enjoyed a whole lot more on a sunny day."

Both ice bars stock wine, beer, mulled wine, vodka and spirits, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and food.
