An Australian snowboarder with a memory lapse is appealing to a Wanaka woman called Cathy, or maybe Kathy, to step forward.

Paul Watkins is now an outdoor guide in Katoomba, New South Wales, but said he lived in Wanaka for two years until four years ago, working at night and skiing all day.

When he left, he left behind his green, Wanaka-made Ribcage snowboard, a pair of skis, ski boots and clothing.

He left the equipment in a garage belonging to Kathy or Cathy and her husband, intending to return.

Paul said at the time he went home, his father was sick with emphysema and he looked after him before he died.

"Each winter I knew I'd have to call [Kathy/Cathy and her husband] but things were pretty hectic with Dad and such, and the time flew and now I've completely forgotten where they lived, or even their last name, which causes me enormous embarrassment."

Mr Watkins contacted the Otago Daily Times in the hope he might be able to make contact with the couple.

He said he first met Kathy/Cathy in about 1994 in Katoomba, where he owned an outdoor company. They met again in Wanaka about 10 years later.

"I'm so hoping they are not freaking out having my gear there, and am just wondering how to get in touch."

The ODT has an email address and phone number it can pass on.
