Queenstown sisters Charlotte and Frances Newbold took sibling rivalry to a new level at the Uni Snow Games in Wanaka.

Charlotte (20) has retired from international high-performance skiing but has been taking the competition to her 18-year-old sister, Frances, on the slopes of Cardrona and Treble Cone.

The Otago University students have also made sure their alma mater is well represented on the results table, with Charlotte winning gold medals in the giant slalom, skier cross and parallel slalom, and Frances collecting bronze in those disciplines.

Charlotte has raced in Europe as a member of the New Zealand women's ski team. Injuries and study led to her withdrawal from the national team last year.

Frances (18) stopped competing when she was at high school but has been a member of the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team and was selected for a national development team.

The sisters said the games were a great chance to compete again.

"It's been really good, really fun," Charlotte said. "I couldn't compete at last year's event, as we had nationals at the same time, but this year it's been really good to represent Otago University." While both are more "recreational" skiers now, they still love competition.

"When we were younger we were really competitive, but we both decided to do other things.

We are definitely still competitive, though," Frances said.
