Short play contest call

Pint Sized Plays New Zealand is calling on all budding playwrights to submit their short plays for the second annual competition.

Founder and organiser entertainer David Cantwell, of Arrowtown, said Pint Sized Plays ''is your opportunity to show just how imaginative and original you can be''.

''If it is funny, if it is sad, if it is original, it could be a winner.''

The competition invites playwrights of all levels of experience to write a script which can be performed by up to three people, within the restrictions of a pub, using the furniture, space and props at hand, and lasts from five to 10 minutes.

''The most interesting, funny, surprising, dramatic or outrageous plays are being sought, to entertain and delight Queenstown's most discerning audiences - beer drinkers,'' Mr Cantwell said.

All entries will be judged on their originality and entertainment value and shortlisted to a maximum of eight.

The eight plays will be performed in front of a live audience at the Queenstown Skycity Casino, the playwrights remaining anonymous to make judging, which will be done by the audience, fair.

The winner will receive the coveted pint pot trophy.

Queenstown entertainer Mike Legge shared the stage with actresses Jo Blick and Fiona Stephenson to perform his comedy about a middle-aged family man's struggle against technology, which won the inaugural Pint Sized Plays NZ competition in March this year.

Scripts should be emailed to davidcantwell@xtra.co.nz.

The shortlisted scripts will be selected in early March 2014 at the monthly play reading of the Remarkable Theatre group.
