SH6 blasting traffic delays

Motorists travelling on State Highway 6 between Queenstown and Cromwell could expect "extended delays" today at the Nevis Bluff.

New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) Otago Southland regional director Bruce Richards said the drilling and blasting work on the bluff above the highway was vital to ensure the safety of road users, and delays were unavoidable.

About 1500cu m of weathered rock would be removed to stabilise a potential hazard.

Subject to the weather, the work was programmed for between 1pm and 2pm today. .

Work would continue between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with openings for traffic on the hour every hour.

Motorists could expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

Work was expected to be complete by April 3.
