The Otaki Shield is awarded to the head boy of Robert Gordons College in Aberdeen, to travel through New Zealand visiting schools and sightseeing for seven weeks during the northern hemisphere summer holidays.
The 2009 winner is Gregory Jones (18).
The scholarship commemorates a sea battle fought in the Atlantic during World War 1, involving Capt Archibald Bisset Smith, a former pupil of Robert Gordons College.
The New Zealand Shipping Company merchant ship SS Otaki was critically damaged in March 1917 by a German raider and Capt Smith ordered the ship's evacuation before he went down with the vessel.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery and devotion to duty and in 1937 his family presented the Otaki Shield to the college, to be given annually to the school's head boy.
The New Zealand Shipping Company traditionally offered a free passage to the winner but the New Zealand Government now assists with air fares and some accommodation.
Gregory only had a day in Queenstown, due to inclement weather, but managed to fit in a jump at A. J. Hackett's Kawarau bungy site and a spin on the Shotover Jet.
"I was a little bit nervous of bungy jumping at first, but it was something I figured if I didn't do now, I would never ever end up doing," he said.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my brief time in Queenstown.
"The scenery is fantastic and I've found the people in the South Island really friendly."
Destination Queenstown CEO Stephen Pahl said it was fantastic to see the scholarship was continuing.
"Gregory comes from a long line of scholars who've had the opportunity to sample some of what Queenstown has to offer and he'll no doubt go back and share his experience with his friends and family."
