The Anzac Day parade in Queenstown had proof of the day's importance for the younger generations, as a young girl walked proudly beside her grandfather.

Holly Moore (12), who is in year 8 at the Wakatipu High School in Queenstown, was walking next to her grandfather Pat Moore, of Auckland, who is a member of the RSA.

Holly was wearing three medals which belonged to her great-grandfather, who had fought in France and at Gallipoli during World War 1.

Her grandfather had brought them with him to Queenstown for the day.

"My father was only 17 when he went off to war.

"I have been at many Anzac Day services, and this is my second here in Queenstown. It makes me very proud that my granddaughter wanted to join me this year," Mr Moore said.

Holly said she looked forward to telling about her experience in school.

"We have been learning about the wars and Gallipoli in school this year, so I feel I understand a bit more about my great-grandfather's situation. I am proud to wear his medals," she said.
