More than 2km of extra road-safety barriers have been added to the Remarkables access road over the Christmas holidays.

NZSki Remarkables Ski Area manager Ross Lawrence said an extra 2.4km of road barriers had been added to the road, which means 6km of the 13km road is now covered.

"The barriers are put in place to meet an international road-safety standard and they certainly increase the perception of safety," he said.

Until three years ago, the busy skifield access road had no safety barriers.

Mr Lawrence said he was satisfied the barriers now covered "all areas of concern".

"We're really happy with the result. People are keener to stay on the left or the right and not drive up the middle - we've actually got a two-lane road now," he said.

To reduce reflection from the sun, and to not detract from the visual landscape, the barriers had been specially painted in places where they could be seen from the Wakatipu Basin, he said.
