Volunteers carefully tidied up the remains of the historic gold-mining community Cooper's Tce, near Arrowtown, with instructions from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust not to pull vegetation from the ground in case it disturbed the ruins.

About 10 residents and enthusiasts from Nomad Safaris, the Department of Conservation Wakatipu (Doc) and the Queenstown and District Historical Society used secateurs and loppers to clear the area of overgrown exotic scrub and help reveal the extent of the forgotten terrace beside the Arrow River.

Society president Bill Dolan said the village was obliterated to a large extent when the pipe was laid for the Arrow irrigation scheme, in the early 20th century.

The site was a work in progress, on Doc administered land and was protected by the trust.

The community was named after Samuel Ward Cooper, who began mining the Arrow River during the 1860s gold rush.

He and his wife Mary were married in Arrowtown in 1866 and their children attended Arrowtown School. Mary died in 1881 and Samuel in 1914. The couple are buried in Arrowtown Cemetery.

Another renowned terrace resident of more than 40 years was John Augustus Miller. The miner was also the correspondent for the Otago Witness for 25 years. Mr Miller died in 1903 and was buried in the cemetery.

3-D rugby displayWakatipu residents can have a free taste of live Rugby World Cup action in 3-D, by visiting the demonstration in the Remarkables Park Town Centre today, between 10am and 5pm.

Patrons will be given 3-D glasses to watch three minutes of footage from Super 15 and Six Nations rugby games inside the truck which arrived in Queenstown yesterday, as part of a nationwide promotion.

Giant screens for 3-D broadcasts of the final four RWC matches will be deployed at the Queenstown Events Centre, other stadiums and 3-D cinemas throughout New Zealand and Australia.
