More than $8000 was raised in donations for the disaster relief effort in Haiti by Queenstown residents, tourists and businesses last Friday.

At least 500 revellers gathered on the Village Green and in the surrounding bars for the free eight-hour music festival Rock 4 Haiti.

Donations came from individuals, retailers and bar staff who turned over their tips.

Rock FM general manager Tim Lockhart said Rock 4 Haiti "couldn't have been done without the support of QLDC [Queenstown Lakes District Council], Revolver and X-it Youth Centre for the Red Cross.

"We haven't come across too many `nos' in the last six or seven days and it's great to see the community can get together and make a difference for a community far away."
