Restaurant evacuated

Diners had their meals interrupted on Saturday night when a fire broke out in a Wanaka building.

The Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived just in time to save the BNZ bank and neighbouring businesses from the blaze which started about 7.30pm.

Capriccio Restaurant was evacuated.

Senior Firefighter Warren Bates said yesterday he believed something discarded into a wheelie bin had caused the blaze above the bank, extensively damaging a room.

Inquiries were continuing, but Mr Bates said the brigade was "reasonably happy" it was not an electrical fault and was accidental.

Fire investigators were not required, he said.

Const Mike Johnston said yesterday staff and tradesmen had been in the building earlier in the day but no-one was there at the time of the fire.

BNZ spokeswoman Diane Maxwell said yesterday it would be business as usual today.
