Police are cautioning motorists and cyclists to respect each other and the road rules in the build-up to the Challenge Wanaka long-distance triathlon this weekend.
Constable Bruce McLean, of Wanaka, said yesterday there were more cyclists on the road than normal.
Police had also received "an alarming number" of traffic complaints from people using Cardrona Valley Rd and State Highway 6, with overtaking a particular concern, he said.
"I definitely get the feeling that the town has a bit of a buzz to it with so many sporting events on in the week. It is hard to miss the fancy road racing bikes with carbon wheels everywhere.
"Please, cyclists, be mindful that, yes, you are lawfully allowed to ride two abreast, as long as it doesn't impede traffic.
"Three abreast is unacceptable and dangerous either for you or the other traffic, if a car finds itself completely on the wrong side of the road [while] passing," Const McLean said.
Const McLean also asked motorists to remember the roads belonged to everyone.
