Resort misses awards cut

The winners of the 2013 Hospitality New Zealand awards for excellence will be announced in Queenstown this month, but there will be nothing for the resort's hospitality operators.

No Queenstown business has made the finals list in any of the 16 categories.

The trade association's annual conference will be held in Queenstown from September 24 to 26.

''We did have some entries, but unfortunately they weren't successful this year,'' Hospitality NZ southern South Island regional manager Fiona Morton, of Invercargill, said.

''The feedback from the judges is there's been a very high calibre of entries.''

John Mann, of Queenstown, who has worked in the hospitality industry for 38 years, was one of the five awards judges.

''It is ... very difficult to become a finalist because they are awards of excellence and that shouldn't reflect negatively on Queenstown,'' Mr Mann said.

Judges were looking for innovation and excellence in disciplines across the country, he said.

''The South is well represented in the finals; it's just that Queenstown hasn't been there of late and should be.

''Queenstown should get involved in the exchange of ideas with counterparts around the country.''

About 250 delegates from around the country are expected to attend the conference.
