Residents asked to 'muck in' with landscaping

Kelvin Heights residents are being encouraged to "muck in" today, to help with some of the $70,000 worth of landscaping at the new State Highway 6-Peninsula Rd intersection, near Queenstown.

New Zealand Transport Agency project manager Nick Rodger said the safety upgrade, largely completed in December, improved visibility, particularly for vehicles turing right from Peninsula Rd on to the state highway.

Only landscaping remained and it was fitting residents be involved.

"Construction work associated with this intersection upgrade meant native plantings and landscaping in the area carried out by the Kelvin Heights Community Association had to be removed.

"Because of this connection, it seemed only right to involve both the association and the local community in the new landscaping work."

Mr Rodger said there was no safety risk from passing traffic. Depending on how many people turned up today, as much as 20% of the landscape area could be replanted.

The remaining work would be completed by the contractor over the next week.

The community planting starts at 9am near the intersection.
