Wakatipu residents answered the Queenstown Returned and Services' Association's call for new members during the Anzac Day memorial service.

Ten people signed up this week, which bolstered the association's membership to 61.

President David Geddes yesterday said the RSA was "very pleased" with the new additions.

More inquiries had been made and would be followed up, he said.

Mr Geddes told more than 500 people who attended the Anzac Day service in the Queenstown Memorial Hall that the association had a role to play in the modern era. The RSA wanted to open its doors to new members to keep the Anzac spirit alive.

The upstairs room in the memorial hall had been repainted, refurbished and named "Gallipoli" to become the RSA's first dedicated base. The room was now available for the association's exclusive use, courtesy of the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Formerly, it was available for hire along with the entire hall.

The Gallipoli room would be open for the benefit of other community groups, Mr Geddes said.

• Those interested in joining the Queenstown RSA were invited to call him on 027 435-8398.
