Report due by year end

A report into a Pacific Blue flight that allegedly took off from Queenstown after the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) twilight cut-off and in bad weather on one of the shortest days of the year should be ready by the end of next month.

CAA spokesman Bill Sommer said investigators had talked to all of the parties involved in the incident, including eyewitnesses, passengers on the flight, Pacific Blue, air traffic controllers and the MetService.

"It's been a detailed investigation and we're just about to come up with a draft report, which will then be considered by all of the people who have contributed to the investigation."

The Boeing 737, flying from Queenstown to Sydney, was due to leave at 4.20pm on June 22, but took off at 5.25pm - 20 minutes past the 5.05pm cut-off.

Under CAA guidelines, planes must depart no later than 30 minutes before twilight from Queenstown Airport, which is surrounded by mountainous terrain and has no radar or runway lights.

Mr Sommer said he was not sure if the report would be released publicly as that was a decision for the CAA director.
