Renault Kangoo choice for rally to Mongolia

It may not be a yellow Mini, but Team Goodbye Pork Pie has bought a 2002 Renault Kangoo and is now modifying it for its rally from the United Kingdom to Mongolia.

Queenstown born-and-raised Carmen Doran (28) said she and brother Marc (24) and friend Brent Clements (25) were very happy with their purchase.

The maroon car would be fitted with a sump guard, a snorkel, additional lights and a roof rack, and repainted.

"We are looking forward to Brent arriving in London on June 30 and from there the countdown is on to July 24 and our send-off date from Goodwood race circuit," Ms Doran said.

"Visa applications are still under way for Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazahkstan, Russia and Mongolia.

Between the three of us, we probably have visas for all of the countries listed, but we all have some to go."

The Queenstown trio are believed to be the only dedicated New Zealand team participating in the 2010 Mongol Rally.

They aim to raise as much money as possible for the Christina Nobel Children's Foundation, which shelters Mongolian orphans.
