Whittled down from an eight-piece ensemble about two years ago, Gaffaney, with guitar and backing vocals from another Christchurch mainstay, Aaron Tokona, says tonight's gig will be "loud and full-on".
The everywhere-at-once approach is made possible due to looping hardware that lets Gaffaney record and loop beats on the go - layering and building up instrumentals, all the while singing - a tough act to juggle.
Gaffaney says that apart from it being cheaper for a duo to tour during a recession, down-sizing Cairo Knife Fight was intended as a challenge for the two to grow as musicians.
They aim to make the Cairo Knife Fight experience "a more fluid one", making the layers gel together as normal instrumentals might, a sound they hope to capture on an forthcoming EP release.
Also taking the stage tonight is Tokona's side project, A Hori Buzz, a jam band, with Tokona the pivot around which a revolving line-up of musicians perform, tonight accompanied by Gaffaney on drums.
• Cairo Knife Fight and A Hori Buzz play at Revolver tonight at 8. Tickets $16.
