Punters will be placing their bets and kissing their lucky charms tomorrow, as the ground thunders once again for the annual Glenorchy races.

Now in it's 49th year, the premier gala event on Glenorchy's social calendar, will feature 10 races, the first of which gallop into action at about 11am, tomorrow.

The Lakeside Rugby Club is organising the annual community event, which is held on the first Saturday after New Year's Day.

Club president Pete Reid said everything was almost in place to ensure an action-packed family day.

"We're just putting the last touches in place. Everything is set for a nice day, and it look's like the weather is good for Saturday," he said.

Races range from the walk trot gallop, relay race and double-banking race, to the open gallop, quarter-mile sprint, and the hotly-contested stockmen's race.

Mr Reid said although anyone with a horse can register, the races were not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced and many local horse-trekking staff entered each year, so the competition should be fierce.

Glenorchy School will hold a fundraising barbecue, and Glenorchy Golf Club will host the beer tent and the hole-in-one competition.

Mr Reid said around 2500 people attended last year's event, which raised about $15,000.

The funds are managed by the club and distributed to causes in the township throughout the year.

Money was used to fund a roof refurbishment at Glenorchy swimming pool, a renovation at the rugby club rooms, and to support local youth sporting programmes.

Tickets cost $10 per adult at the gate and children will be admitted free.

Car entry is free and parking is provided.
